To obtain a business visa you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an Expression of Interest (‘EOI’) via SkillSelect.
  2. Submit a nomination application to the Australian State or Territory that you want to live and operate your business in.
  3. Submit your visa application.

There are two business visas that can be used to obtain residency in Australia. The subclass 188 business and innovation (business innovation) stream visa and the subclass 132 business talent (significant business history) stream visa. These visas are often referred to as a 188a and 132a visa.

Business Innovation and Investment (188a Visa)

The 188a is a temporary business visa. You can apply for permanent residency after holding this visa for 4 years.

To be eligible to receive a 188a visa, you will need to demonstrate that you have successfully owned and operated businesses in the past. The minimum eligibility criteria for receiving a subclass 188a visa are:

  1. For at least 2 out of the last 4 fiscal years, you owned a business (or businesses) that had an annual turnover of at least $500,000 AUD.
  2. You and/or your spouse/partner have business and personal assets that have a net value of at least $800,000 AUD.
  3. You have at least 65 point.

Business Talent (132a Visa)

This is visa provides immediate permanent residency for successful applicants.

The minimum criteria that you will need to meet to be eligible for a 132a visa are:

  1. For at least 2 out of the last 4 fiscal years, you and your spouse/partner own business assets that have a net value of at least $400,000 AUD.
  2. For at least 2 out of the last 4 fiscal years, you owned a business (or businesses) that had an annual turnover of at least $3M AUD.
  3. You and/or your spouse/partner have business and personal assets that have a net value of at least $1.5M AUD.
