Investment Visa

Investment visas allow migrants to undertake investment activities in Australia. 

To obtain an investment visa you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Submit an Expression of Interest (‘EOI’) via SkillSelect
  2. Submit a nomination application to either Australian State or Territory that you want to live in, or to the CEO of Austrade.
  3. Submit your visa application.

There are three different investment visas currently available. These visas are the subclass 188 investor stream visa (188b visa), the subclass 188 significant investor stream visa (188c visa) and the subclass 188 premium investor stream (188d). 

Investor Stream (188b Visa)

The 188b is a temporary investment visa that can last for up to 4 years and 3 months. After holding your 188b visa for 4 years you can apply for permanent residency.

In order to receive a 188b visa you will need to demonstrate that you meet these minimum criteria:

  1. You have a successful record of owning shares in businesses, having cash on deposit, loaning money to businesses, purchasing stocks, bonds, real estate, gold, or silver.
  2. You have at least 3 years’ experience managing a business you own or your investments.
  3. For at least 1 of the last 5 fiscal years, you have managed a business that you owned at least 10% share of or you have held investments that are worth at least $1.5M AUD.
  4. You and/or your spouse/partner have business and personal assets that have a net value of at least $2.25M AUD.
  5. You have at least 65 points.

Significant Investor Stream (188c Visa)

The 188c is a temporary investment visa that can also last for up to 4 years and 3 months (you can apply to have your 188c visa extended so that it lasts for up to 6 years). You can apply for permanent residency after holding this visa for 4 years.

The minimum criteria you will need to meet to be eligible for a 188c visa are:

  1. You have at least $5M AUD available to invest in Australia.
  2. The source of your funds for your $5M AUD investments come from income, profits, interest, sale of assets, gifts, bequests, or inheritances.
  3. You can provide evidence to verify the source of your funds, which includes historical financial documents (i.e bank statements, pay slips and tax documents), dividends, retained profits, wills, deeds, payment receipts, cheques, asset valuations, acquisitions and disposals.

Premium Investor Stream (188d Visa)

This visa is also a temporary visa that lasts for up to 4 years and 3 months. Unlike 188b and 188c visas, 188d visa holders can apply for permanent residency after 12 months.

To receive a 188d visa you will need to meet the minimum criteria below.

  1. You can invest at least $15M AUD in Australia, or you can donate this amount of funds to a philanthropic contribution (i.e charity).
  2. You can verify the source of the funds used for your investment (same as a 188c visa).
